Great Performing Casual SPD Shoe
Posted by Randy H. on May 29th 2017
I'm about 300 miles in with mixed commuting and fitness riding, so I can't speak to long term reliability of these shoes, but I will review them based on everything I've experienced to date. I came from a pair of Giro Privateers that, after 4.5 years and more than ten thousand miles, were finally getting due for replacement. Initially, I thought I'd be drastically stepping down in quality as Rumble VRs tend to be seen as entry-level, while the Privateers are nearly double and more performance specific. I'm happy to report that step down factor wasn't as noticeable or painful as I'd anticipated.
The Rumble VRs fit very well in the heel and around the foot, making the clipped in pedaling experience quite solid. The thick Vibram rubber sole is very comfortable, and because of that increased thickness, these are the first passably casual SPD shoe I've owned where my cleats do not touch the ground beneath. I've had Chrome Kursks and DZR Midnights all of which had a little scrape while walking. This is a huge selling point, because it's definitely going to extend the life of the cleat. Additionally, except for the blazing red-orange laces, these are fairly non-descript and you can get away with wearing them as a casual shoe all day long. I've worn them through many a full work day comfortably and unnoticed. I have plans to swap the laces, but really haven't made that jump just yet. I'm excited to try these out on a hot, long distance ride to see how they perform. I think they will be fine, because of the great mesh venting on the top and side of the shoe (worth noting -- not rain proof, and probably not the best for cold weather, without covers) and the over all comfortable build, but time will tell.
Finally, I agree with just about every prior reviewer I came across, you definitely want to size up one. I'm not sure why there is a size discrepancy between this shoe and my other Giros for instance, but it's real and you likely won't regret the decision to size-up. I'm normally a size 11-12 US depending on shoe brand, my previous Giros are 45's and I ended up fitting perfectly into 46 in the Rumble VR. I think my next cycling shoe purchase will be another pair of these, this time in Blue/Gum sole.

I wear 9 to 9.5 in regular shoes. This was my first pair of bike shoes and unfortunately they did not fit. They were too small for my feet. Theyre stiff where they should be and i could see how they would fit nicely if i had gotten a size up.
I really like the overall look and feel and i liked how nicely the cleats are recessed. In the end I got a different shoe that was on sale.

Loving these shoes! Very comfortable shoes that run true-to-size, and the Vibram soles are the perfect stiffness for longer trips, while still allowing decent walkability for quick errands around town. Black and red is sharp! One thing I noticed is the red is a bit on the orange side in person.
